Katie Barkel

Creative Video Editor & Film Director

Katie Barkel is a Detroit-based filmmaker, educator, and activist. She earned her B.A. in Film & Video Studies from the University of Michigan. Katie has been working as a creative video editor for 15 years, and has taught video production and visual storytelling at College for Creative Studies. Her short films have screened at MoMA’s PopRally, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Media City Film Festival, and in other spaces across North America and Europe. In 2015, she completed her first feature-length documentary, Writer’s Block in the Rivera Court, which premiered in a solo exhibition at the Detroit Film Theater. She recently directed a short film about poet James D. Fuson, which premiered at the Freep Film Festival in April 2024 and will air on Detroit Public Television in May 2024.
